Private online gaming operators will create 1,300 new jobs in Ontario

New report from PlayCanada offers evidence that worries about job losses at land-based casinos are overblown

VANCOUVER, BC, March 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Nearly 1,300 jobs will be added in Ontario following the impending launch of private online gambling operators, according to a recently released report by PlayCanada, which tracks Canada’s nascent gambling market. The Play Canada report, which can be found hereoffers strong evidence that online gambling does not cannibalize land-based casino jobs.

“We discovered by looking globally that online cannibalization is largely a myth, often propagated by brick-and-mortar casino operators understandably concerned that online gaming will eat away at their profits,” said Robyn McNeil, editor of PlayCanada.com and co-author of the report. “The truth is that online casinos and sportsbooks often act as a tide that lifts all boats, expanding the market for the benefit of all industry players.”

To supplement the report, PlayCanada.com has compiled data and other information from industry insiders, hiring professionals and economic experts. It includes a detailed search of job listings in comparable jurisdictions.

Ontario expected to be the first province to welcome private online gaming operators when sports betting and online casinos launch on April 4. Other provinces should follow suit.

In addition to expected jobs, PlayCanada’s research team also explored:

What PlayCanada has found is that not only will online gaming create 1,295 jobs, about half of the approximately 2,600 jobs that Canada with the nationwide expansion of online gaming, many are expected to be high-quality jobs with above-average pay.

“Land-based casino operators will have to adapt, but the introduction of private online gaming operators should be a net benefit for Ontario and beyond,” said Dustin Gouker, which oversees the network of Play sites that includes PlayCanada.com. “Ultimately, the benefits of private and regulated online gambling operators to the economy will be tangible.”
