Online gambling: Man fined RM1,100

Kota Kinabalu: The Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday fined a 32-year-old man RM1,100 or two months in jail for engaging in online gambling activities.Lovely Magistrate Natasha Charles handed down the sentence to Sharif Abdul Kadir after admitted to gambling online with a mobile phone at 2:30 p.m. on May 12 at the premises of Kg Likas. Prosecuting Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik told the court that Sharif was arrested by the police on the basis of tips and money of RM184 was also seized from him.

Unrepresented, Sharif asked for a fine and said he had no permanent job and had six dependents. He was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming House Act, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months in jail, or both, if convicted. . The court ordered that the seized money be confiscated by the government. In another case, a 21-year-old man who fraudulently deposited RM2,300 into his bank account two years ago was fined RM100 or jailed for two weeks.


Xavier Joe admitted to having the money in his bank account, which he did not give a satisfactory explanation of how he obtained it on May 24, 2020. He had committed an offense under Article 22A(1) of the Minor Offenses Ordinance which provides for a fine of up to RM100 or up to three months imprisonment or both on conviction. Duty counsel Lim Ming [email protected], representing Xavier, asked for a fine and told the court that Xavier, who currently works in Penang as a kitchen helper at a restaurant, returned here to deal with the current charge. The prosecution asked for an adequate sentence.
