Infosys engineer kills himself after losing money gambling

Balasora: Greed to make a quick buck cost a young system engineer in Odisha his life. Systems engineer Soumitra Nandy, 27, is believed to have died by suicide after losing money in online gambling. He hailed from Ambiliatha village under Jaleswar block and worked with Infosys, Bengaluru.

Family members of the deceased said Soumitra had been working from home since December 2020 due to the Covid pandemic. On March 11, 2022, one of Soumitra’s friends filed a police complaint at Jaleswar Police Station accusing him of dithering to return the money he took from the complainant.

According to reports, Jaleswar Police summoned Soumitra based on the complaint and took her cellphone and laptop. Soumitra has taken out loans of around Rs 50 lakh from different people for online gambling. In another case, Soumitra’s father repaid around Rs 20 lakh to one of the young engineer’s friends after he sold a piece of land.

Family members of Soumitra said that since his appearance before the police, the youngster had been quite disturbed and had been using pesticides on Tuesday morning. He was rushed to Jaleswar Hospital and later transferred to Balasore District Headquarters Hospital. When his condition deteriorated, Soumitra was transferred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where he died during treatment last night.

They blamed Soumitra’s friends who loaned him out and then blackmailed him.

Soumitra wrote two notes to her parents and one of her relatives before consuming the pesticide.
